Our Staff

David Warrington – Company Director

I have spent most of my working life in the Animal Feed Industry. I was Managing Director for a National Business in this industry for 20 years until 2014 when I decided to pursue other business interests.

Highwood Boarding Kennels is based at home and clearly I am strongly engaged and connected to the business.

It is important to me to create the best environment for our team to succeed and fulfil the expectations of our guests and their owners during their stay with us, this means we only employ people who are absolutely passionate about dogs and their day to day care.

As a team we understand that every guest is different and we strive to find out as much as we can about the individuality of first time stays so that we can cater for their needs.

Lauren Backhouse – Kennel Manager

I have been a part of the Highwood team since May 2010.

My favourite part of the job has to be when a nervous guest comes into the kennels and their confidence grows while boarding with us. Also when the dogs come into the kennels and they enjoy going outside with others they have lots of fun. I love talking to customers about their dog as they are their pride and joy.

My favourite breeds of dog come from the gundog group which include Spaniels, Retrievers etc. I currently own a springer spaniel who is bonkers and loves coming into the kennels to play with his friends.

I have an Extended Diploma in Animal Management, City & Guilds in Animal First Aid and I am also a fully qualified dog groomer.

Steph Bowler- Kennel Coordinator

I originally began working at Highwood as a Kennel Assistant, this enabled me to get to know many of our regular boarders very well, so when I became a Kennel Coordinator in July 2019 all that was left for me to do was to get to know all the owners! I absolutely love my role here and no two days are the same, the best part would have to be reassuring the more nervous owners that their furry members of the family will be very well taken care of, then on the next visit their dog has the confidence to run through to the kennels without even looking back.

Unfortunately, I do not currently have my own dog but my future plans are to hopefully take on an ex-racing greyhound.

I have a National Diploma in Animal Management level three and a certificate in Client Care Advising.

Deb Slater – Weekend Receptionist

I have been working at Highwood Boarding Kennels since 2011 after reaching retirement age. Just wanted a part-time job & this is perfect.

I normally work at weekends as a receptionist but am available to cover holidays in the kennels too. I also have the nickname ‘D.I.Y Deb’, any small problem and there I am with my little box of tools!

Since changing my role, I now know not just our guests but their owners too.

I have a dog of my own, a terrier, quite a character, as terriers can be. Love our walks together & he loves them even more when there is a ball to play with.

I really enjoy my time at the kennels and work with a great and dedicated team.
